Director of Gift Planning

Location: Sioux Falls South Dakota

The Director of Gift Planning is directly responsible for leading, developing, organizing, and marketing a sustainable planned giving program to support South Dakota State University. The Director of Gift Planning works directly with the Foundation Development Team, Volunteer Network, University Leadership and Estate Planning Professionals and those individuals who have expressed interest in supporting South Dakota State through a planned gift. The Director of Gift Plan! ning is expected to have a strong working knowledge of planned! giving policies/procedures, gift vehicles and marketing/communications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership

Commitment to the mission, vision and core values of the South Dakota State University Foundation.

Direct and provide oversight of the Foundation’s planned giving program.

Represent the Foundation at university functions, alumni events, and meetings within other organizations to support the Foundation’s mission.

Maintain strong professional networking relationship with peer representatives and institutions (development professionals, attorneys, financial planners, accountants and trust officers).

Personal Fund Raising

Maintain a portfolio of approximately 100 planned giving prospects.

Annually close a wide range of planned gifts including: charitable gift annuities, real estate and other non-cash tangible properties, charitable remainder and lead trusts, testam! entary trusts, bequests, life insurance policies and retained life estates.

Provide tax and estate planning information necessary to secure or promote planned/deferred gifts.

Work collaboratively with and in support of development staff, university leadership and other volunteers to identify prospects, cultivate relationships, make solicitations and implement stewardship plans for donors as necessary.

Continue professional development by attending seminars and conferences, as well as keeping abreast of current tax laws as they pertain to charitable giving and administration of programs.

Gift Planning Program Management

In consultation with the executive management team, establish the vision, goals, and objectives for the planned giving program.

Enhance membership in the Foundation’s planned giving society (Sylvan Circle).

Assist in planning and coordinating of workshops, seminars and campus events for planned ! giving donors and prospects.

Assist in directing the Foundatio! n’s planned giving/deferred giving marketing program. Components include, but are not limited to: print advertising, annual reports, publications and integrating other strategies designed to motivate donors to provide both short-range and long-range support for South Dakota State.

Job Requirements

Education/Training/Experience

Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree desired.

Five or more years’ of relevant experience in development, preferably in major gifts and/or planned giving (estate law, finance or trust services, etc.).

Qualifications/Requirements:
Ability to work in a team environment, with professional demeanor, self-reliance and resourcefulness.

Demonstrated ability to carry out effective prospect identification and assessment, engagement and cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans.

Demonstrated experience in strategic planning related to development programs.

Demon! strated strong verbal and written communication skills.

High energy, positive, high degree of initiative.

Must have knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software (i.e. MSWord, Excel, Powerpoint).

Work environment requires consistent attention to detail in composing, typing and proofing materials, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.

Willingness to travel and maintain flexible work schedule.
